I will revisit some of the most influential studies in social psychology that tackle the question, under what circumstances ordinary people are willing to behave in ways that are cruel to others or unresponsive to their suffering. I will connect the results of these classic studies to current public debates on the causes of violent behavior, as well as to the findings of more recent social psychological experiments.
